Sairam friends,
When Sai Baba lived in Shirdi for over 60 years few devotees perceived him only as another ordinary human with some powers. Dwarakamai was the whole universe of Saibaba during his life in Shirdi with flesh and blood. Sai never bothered to go out of the Shirdi Village.
Very rarely he would go to Neem goan in one side and Rahata in the other side but that was to meet his ardent devotee Kushalchand. People in Rahata used to welcome Sai happily on such occasions. After meeting for a while, Sai used to come back to Shirdi village. Such was Sai’s presence in Shirdi that people believed that he is one among them.
When someone is close to us, we will never know their value
There are few Sai devotees who might be planning to settle in Shirdi or stay in Shirdi for few month. Honestly, That really is not essential. What really matters is how deeply you remember Sai where ever you are doing your day to day duty.
During Sai’s life time, Many devotees who were native of Shirdi used to come to Dwarakamai as and when they wish. Some devotees see him as God incarnate and give him all respect. There are few devotees who see him as friend or a close family member. They took too much rights on him.
They will come to Saibaba asking him to fulfill a wish as we go to Sai temple these days. After few days when the desire is not fulfilled they will directly go to Saibaba and tell on his face
“You cheated me. You are a beggar. You are a liar. What ever you promised din’t came true.”
Sai will silently stare at them sadly because saints accepts a devotees emotions, feelings and anger. Sai never scolds back but simply tries to console them and make them believe that their life will be good.
When people don’t have enough earnings, they would come to Saibaba and scold him saying “Everyone calls you God. I am spending day and night with you. Can’t you bless me with good fortune?. You simply sit here to do good to others and not me”
They used to call saibaba without respect like “Tu” and “Re”
The reason for this disrespect is that Sai was close to them. He lived in a human form, easily accessible and seemed to live in Dwarakamai forever. When someone is close to us, we will never know their value.
Sai blessing women with Child
One of the devotee who was taking too much rights on Shirdi Sai Baba was Madhavrao Deshpande – Shyama. He used to argue with Baba. You must have read in the Sai leela where a women comes to Dwarakamai seeking blessing for a child. She was too shy to ask this blessing when many other devotees were near Sai. So she seeks help of Shyama.
Shyama told her “Come with a Coconut and other offerings when I signal you”
The women steps inside Dwarakamai…
She offers the coconut to Sai as Dakshina. The coconut was dry and rolling inside the outer cover when Sai shook it. Baba asked ” Madhav, What does the women want?”
Baba, She wants a child to role in her stomach.
Baba replies ” How foolish are people? Can the coconut bless anyone with blessing of Child?”
Madhav -“Its not the coconut but your “Words” Your assurance which can bless her with series of child”.
Baba gives the coconut to the women saying “You will be blessed with a Child”.
Now comes the argumentative nature of Shyama.
He asks when?
Seems Sai promised a lot to Madhav which never came true. ( Like he does to me in this birth …he he…)
Baba replies ” With in 12 month”
Shyama to the women ” If within 12 month you are giving birth to a child as assured by Baba, then I will use the same coconut to beat on Baba’s head or else change my name”
The women was so happy for blessing of Baba and she really did gave birth to a Child within 12 month as assured by Sai.
Now if we think about the words used by Shyama, “I will beat the coconut on Baba’s head” …Ha ha…How intimate he must be to Sai to argue with him and use such hurting words.
Devotees realized Shirdi Sai Baba’s divinity after his Mahasamadhi
When Saibaba had Mahasamadhi on October 15th 1918, holy day of Vijayadasami, devotees from far of places came running to Shirdi and cried like child. People in Shirdi could not belief that the God who lived and played with them is no more. Is it true that Sai is no more with us?
Madhav was really upset and realized his mistakes. He finally tells to his friends that he argued and fought with Saibaba without realizing his divinity. How could he do it to the God incarnate just because Sai lived and moved with them in human form.
Madhav saw some devotees coming to Shirdi after hearing the news of Baba’s Mahasamadhi and they could not control their emotions. They rolled in the mud of Shirdi and cried as they believed Shirdi Sand is so sacred as Sai’s holy feet touched it.some devotees were too emotional that they could not live any longer.
Nanawali was so harsh to Sai that he has insulted him many times. Sai accepted him because he knows not all devotees will have same character and nature. Some are soft and some have heart like stone and they never bother others feelings. No one imagined that the same Nanawali could not live without Sai.
Just within a week after Baba’s Mahasamadhi, Nanawali declared, I will go and he passed away.
Madhav could not count how many times he has hurt and insulted Saibaba with his words and actions. Sai never bothered it and was ever caring to him. Sai took care of him as his child and accepted all his scoldings.
Only when Baba had Mahasamadhi, Madhav realized he is God incarnate and his divinity is supreme. What’s the use of realizing Sai’s greatness when he is gone forever from human form?
That’s how the world works.
Even today,we all ask Saibaba to bless us with this and that…When things doesn’t seem to happen, we show our anger on him. Is it right? Sai is a God who walked on Earth. When so many saints choose to live in forest, Sai lived as one among us. He cares for us like a family member.
Sai will do good to you and your family. Have Faith and Patience – Shradha and Saburi
Read the holy life of Saibaba – Sai Satcharitra
Listen to Aarti of Shirdi Sai Baba
Realize that though Sai looks like a poor fakir who is like a friend and family member, he is God incarnate – An avatar of Dattatreya and we must give respect to him.

Dear Venkat ,
I was going throught the Article. I suppose Baba’s Maha Samadhi was “15th Oct 1918” .. In the article I guess there is a typo and it reads as “18th Oct” 1918 .
Om Sairam
Edit: Thanks for correcting me. Yes. I write in hurry at times and do such mistakes. Ofcourse this is a major one though. Shall be careful. Sai blessings for your family – Venkat
