Sairam friends,
Sometimes, I feel like doing Kumkum archana for Mahalakshmi in my house. I arrange all the statues, Ganesha, Shiva Ling, Meenakshi amman, Mahalakshmi, Sai and Saraswathi over a plate which i keep especially for Pooja. Then I lit lamps and start to chant any Mantra. In the photo below, You can see only Mahalakshmi, Sai and Saraswathi because all other Gods are inside Kumkum * Venkat Smiles.
I the past few years, I have done Kumkum archana reciting various mantra especially
Mahalakshmi Sahasranama,
Durga Saptashati,
Dattatreya Sahasranama
and even reading Sai Samartha Satcharitra.
This time, I wanted to show my love on Goddess Raja Mathangi also called Shyamala Devi….So I did kumkum archana chanting Sai Matangi…
I do it the way women does….. he he…
One of those things my Mother is too concerned about. “I don’t think today’s girls likes you doing such pooja”. To me, Its a way of showing my love on the Goddess. I wonder from where on earth Sai taught me to do archana with sacred vermilion – Kumkum. I have seen the old priest in Annapurana temple do kumkum archana for Sri Chakra infront of Annapurani and giving it to devotees. I love the fragrance this kumkum creates that it instantly sends into me a divine feeling. That Goddess lives in my heart.
Kumkum:
Kungkumam,Hindi Kumkum is a powder used for social and religious markings in Hinduism. It is either made from turmeric or saffron.
Greatness of placing Kumkum on forehead
Kumkum is applied between the eye brows because it is the place where three nervous systems meet –
Ida – solar force
Pingala – lunar force
and
Sushumna – spinal cord.
On keeping kumkum between eye brows helps in integration of nervous system and protects a person from negative energies and any wards of evil. The place also symbolizes third eye of enlightenment which opens when your mind is purified.
Kumkum and Women:
In Hindu tradition, Married women apply red kumkuma in front of their parting on their forehead as a symbol of marriage. This is called vermilion, or in Hindi, sindoor. According to mythology the kumkum shows the love and respect she has on her husband.
Mathangi is Vehicle of Guru:
Sai has said “I am not a Guru who imparts knowledge by ear”. At times, we expect saibaba to guide us with each and every aspect of life. Honestly, Sai wants us to take our own decision on whats good to do.
At times, Sai guides us through someone who cares for us or through dream etc. Since the Guru conveys message to us through spoken word, his vehicle among Goddess is Matangi. She represents teachings of Guru and tradition. Thus by honoring Matangi, we honor our Guru. Matangi is wild, playful and ecstatic Goddess.
Matangi resides in the throat chakra which is the center of speech and also in the tip of the tongue.
Saraswati Nerve:
According to Dr.David Frawleys book, There is a special nerve or channel of the subtle body called Saraswati that runs from Third eye to tip of the tongue, which relates to Matangi. This is the stream of inspiration from the mind to its expression via speech. Matangi represents the flow of bliss through this channel which makes one poet and excel in any creative art.
I first learned about Raja Matangi from the book Sree Paadha Shree Vallabha Charitramrutam where couples worship Raja Matangi to be blessed with Happy married life. Then i started learning about greatness of Matangi devi and also experiences some of her powers which i wrote in the article below.
Matangi Devotion for your Mother:
Matangi is also worshiped by people who wants to improve their speaking skills ( basically, expressing ones thought creatively) and also by Musicians and Singers. Matangi worship can make your mother happy and fulfills her desires. Matangi blesses us with good health by getting rid of diseases as she represents prana or the life force in our body.
Meditation on Raja Matangi:
Meditation on Raja Matangi is truly powerful and I have to say, you will certainly feel her presence in your heart and home. She lives with you always when you devotedly worship her. Devotees who have a disturbed mind and who are going through too much of mental depression must worship Matangi and true Guru like Shirdi Sai baba. But its your responsibility to identify the weakness in your mind and take steps to make yourself a better human being.
Kumkum archana for Sai Mahalakshmi chanting holy name of Mathangi:
The past few days since I am chanting the holy name of Goddess Raja Matangi and Sai, I wanted to do something she truly loves. Matangi loves to be smeared with Kumkum. She is green in complexion and wears Red Saree. I prayed for my Parents and someone very special to me. I prayed for my Sister, Bil and our sweet Katya too as she keeps asking her parents to take her to India to meet us.
I did this pooja devotedly for few hours offering Kumkum to Goddess Mahalakshmi as Raja Matangi and Sai.
I wanted to write how sacred is Kumkum in StarSai. As the world keeps changing, people forget our traditions and culture. So i loved expressing what I did today. Hope it helps friends.
Matangi is pronounced as Mathangi. She’s truly a Goddess of Mercy and a tantric form of Saraswathi. Please be careful while worshiping Dasa Mahavidya Goddess as they are very fierce. You have to be true to them as they love you deeply.
Shyamala Dandakam:
Mahakavi Kalidasa lived in 6th century. He was considered as a utter fool who was cutting a branch of a tree sitting in the side it would fall down. By grace of Kaali, Kalidasa became a famous poet. He composed ‘Shyamala Dandakam” praising Matangi which i am trying to recite these days.
Shyamala Dandakam by Maha Kavi Kalidasa
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
(Kalidasa was perhaps the greatest of the Sanskrit poets. He has written great dramas like Shakunthalam and great epics like Kumara Sambhavam, Malavikagni mithram , the message poetry called Megha Sandesham etc. He is extremely famous for the use of appropriate similes and metaphors. Shyamala Dandakam is perhaps the greatest stotra written by him eulogizing the mother goddess –Shyamala.
He has employed a poetic style called Dandakam in writing this prayer. Dandakam is that poetry where some of the lines have more than 26 syllables. It very much resembles prose. In this case, the entire Dandakam is a single sentence from start to the end. I have attempted to retain the same style
There is a folk story about how he came about to write this stotra. He was a foolish wood cutter. The courtiers of a proud princess made him act as a wise man and made the princess marry him. The princess advised the wood cutter to enter in to a temple of kali, when she goes out for a walk and lock himself in. When Kali came back, the wood cutter refused to allow her in , unless she makes him wise. She did that. Shyamala Dandakam is supposed to be the first prayer of this wood cutter to Kali after he became wise.)
Bombay Saradha has sung this Mantra so beautiful that you feel divine when you listen to it. Many thanks to her divine voice.

I came back home and kept listening to Shyamala Dandakam. I can see the lamp I lit in the morning is still glowing beautifully to Sai Mahalakshmi.
